How It Works

Catalog production begins with understanding your content. We'll discuss page count, image requirements, and binding preferences. For smaller catalogs (up to about 64 pages), saddle-stitching (staples through the spine) works well and keeps costs down. For thicker catalogs, perfect binding (glued spine like a paperback book) gives a professional, bookshelf-ready look. We print covers on heavier stock than interior pages for durability. Send us your print-ready PDF or work with our design team on layout. We proof digitally first, then run physical proofs for color-critical jobs. After printing, we bind, trim to final size, and shrink-wrap or box for shipping.

Why Choose MCI

Catalogs require precision—registration must be perfect across dozens of pages, color has to be consistent from cover to back, and binding needs to hold up to repeated use. We've produced catalogs for manufacturers, retailers, and distributors across the Midwest since 1984. Our bindery equipment handles both saddle-stitch and perfect binding in-house, which means faster turnaround and better quality control than farms that outsource binding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between saddle-stitch and perfect binding?
Saddle-stitch uses staples through the spine fold—best for catalogs up to about 64 pages. Perfect binding uses glue to attach pages to a flat spine (like a paperback book)—required for thicker catalogs and gives a more premium appearance. Page count must be divisible by 4 for saddle-stitch.
What page count works best for catalogs?
Page counts must be multiples of 4. For saddle-stitch, we recommend 8-64 pages. Perfect-bound catalogs typically start at 48 pages and can go to 200+ pages. Very thin catalogs (8-12 pages) sometimes work better as folded brochures instead.
Can you print different paper stocks for covers vs. interior?
Yes, and we recommend it. A heavier cover stock (80lb or 100lb cover) protects interior pages and makes the catalog feel more substantial. Interior pages are typically 80lb or 100lb text. We can also add UV coating to covers for extra durability.
How should I prepare catalog files for printing?
Submit a single PDF with pages in reader spreads (sequential order, not printer spreads). Include 0.125" bleed on all sides. Embed all fonts. Images should be 300 DPI minimum. We'll preflight your files and flag any issues before printing.
